ashley g
February 1, 2008knitty, knitty
ashley g is another artist contributing to lost + found next weekend.
here’s what she has to say about her art:
“I’m 26 years old. I have loved arts, crafts, creatures, and nature my entire life. I enjoy focusing on portraiture and capturing a brief moment in time. My artwork tends to be simple, but with a sophisticated or stark color palette. I believe great emotion can be conveyed in a simple gesture or look. The characters I create, whether monsters or little girls, are simple, humorous, empathetic, and a little bit pathetic.
I strongly believe in what you’re happiest doing at five is what you will be happiest doing your entire life. Growing up, I endlessly drew and embroidered onto washcloths that my grandma gave me little creatures and animals that I desperately wanted to live in the woods of my backyard. In my mind these creatures had tiny, magnificent, ornate lairs in the trunks of old trees (which I also drew, along with maps of how to get there). And although these creatures were elusive and shy, they always decided to befriend me. Over the years, my creatures have become decidedly more design-driven, put a part of me is still just drawing little friends to have.”

continuing with the installments on artists in our upcoming show, today i thought i’d share a little bit about chris brindely.
from his bio:
“I’m 24 years old and I’ve been drawing since I can remember. For as long as I can remember it has made me content. I’m a firm believer that once you’ve found something you love you hold onto it. You nourish your relationship with it and allow it to grow with you, as you grow.
In 2005 I graduated from the Maryland institute college of art, with a BFA in illustration.
I have an enormous amount of things in my head and feel its necessary to share them with others. I don’t like using reference, and I prefer to use my memory of things to guide what I make. I’m interested in the division between the idea of something and the actual thing. I’ve got kind of a weird process I use to generate new things from combining the ideas of other things. I spend way too much time in my head.”
ashley armbruster
January 31, 2008ashley is showing in our next show, lost + found.
ashley’s artist statement for lost + found:
From the creatures you meet, to the things that you eat, from the loves that you’ve lost, to the treasures you’ve found, what good is love without a little loss? My work emphasizes the importance of things we hold dear like our hearts, our trinkets and our friends, both human and not.

kara burke
January 26, 2008kara burke is one of the artists showing in our next show, lost + found, in two weeks.
from her bio:
“My young days were great. Riding mattresses down the staircase, constructing my very own pterodactyl costume out of green felt, getting to be the “block” in my elementary school’s christmas performance and of course being pulled in a sled in the middle of the summer (thank you Louie). It’s the small moments throughout life that really mean something big. Those are the memories that will always remain stuck.
I grew up in the suburban midwest, where the best pop is known as Vernors and the lakes really are great. I later moved east, to a small town just outside of Boston. By small, I mean tiny. Daily activities involved braking for wild turkeys, roller-skating on gravel and waiting for those very consistent snow days.
As soon as high-school ended, I decided to venture west, the bay area is what we like to call it. I received my BA & BFA in illustration from the University of San Francisco & California College of the Arts. This is where I stopped drawing from just real life and began creating images derived from my childhood. I admit it, some of them were dreams.
I find enjoyment in unveiling the simple moments in life. You could also say that this is my way of holding onto my youth. In that case, I don’t think I’ll ever age, I don’t think I’ll ever stop.”
